Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

One of the ways you can prevent gum disease is by recognizing the signs of the disease. If you think you may have gum disease, contact 3rd South Dental at 801-355-0380 and make an appointment with our dentists. Dr. Andrew Theurer or Dr. Cameron Call will examine your mouth to diagnose the disease and create a treatment plan that meets your needs.

Signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing, flossing or eating hard foods
  • Changes in your bite or in the fit of dentures or other removable appliances
  • Gum recession
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pain in your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Sores in your mouth

Our dentists will perform gum disease evaluations as part of your routine dental exams. These evaluations include an exam of your gums to check for signs of the disease, a review of your medial history and a discussion about your oral health to determine your risk of developing gum disease.

Our dentists may take measurements around your teeth to determine how much space is between the tooth or gum during this evaluation. These measurements also record any gum recession or loosening of your teeth and allow us to check for inflamed gum tissue. Our dentists will discuss the results and your oral hygiene with you before making recommendations on ways you can improve your oral health.
